As of February 1, 2023, the Farm and Livestock Education Program (FLEP) has over 200 human volunteers take care of: 17 chickens, 4 rabbits, 3 beef cows, 2 dairy cows, 5 wool sheep, 5 breeding sheep, 11 dairy goats, 1 Nigerian goat buck, 3 eco goats, 5 Indian runner ducks, and a handful of quail. FLEP Volunteers care for the animals. Animals are owned by private individuals or by the Friends of Kinder Farm Park. Feed, bedding and veterinarian costs are covered by animal owners, or by funds from the Friends of Kinder Farm Park, Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks, and donations from the public.

In 2019, FLEP used five tons of feed, 300 bales of hay, and 30 600lb round bales of hay. Fifteen dollars buys a 50lb bag of feed. Ten dollars buys two bales of hay.

Thank you for your generosity to the park and animals that are enjoyed by so many visitors. Contributions to the Friends of Kinder Farm Park, Inc, are deductible to the extent permitted by law.

For the past 2 years, we have noticed that our grazing animals (sheep, goats and cows) are having a difficult time finding relief from the heat and humidity. Rangers, 4H and the Friends of Kinder Farm Park have assessed the situation and found that we have a serious problem on our farm…a lack of shade trees.

To remedy this situation, the Friends are working with park staff, and various county and state agencies to find a solution. This group has identified 17 areas that shade trees are necessary. The trees need to be of sufficient size to offer shade quickly and to avoid being eaten or destroyed by the animals. Fencing will also be needed to further protect the trees. The Friends of Kinder Farm Park have donated $1,500 to this effort and are looking for financial help from the community.

To assist in the effort, Ranger Jess is making a giving tree for the Visitors Center that will be used to show funds raised.

ADD A LEAF TO OUR TREE

  • Green leaf for a $50.00 donation
  • Bronze leaf for $100.00
  • Silver leaf for $200.00
  • Gold leaf for $500.00 (enough to pay for a stand of trees)

The park staff is hoping to start planting trees this fall, and, with the help of volunteers, will maintain the trees.
